What is Oxytocin?
Often called “the love drug,” Oxytocin is a chemical messenger within the body that plays an active role in social bonding, social memory, love and intimacy, which makes it particularly good for sexual wellness. Oxytocin is also good for sexual reproduction with its maternal functions before, during and after childbirth.
What does Oxytocin do?
Oxytocin plays a significant role in having a healthy human experience. It’s naturally secreted when we touch, hug, or experience an orgasm. Oxytocin release is associated with sexual arousal (e.g., a romantic couple’s oxytocin levels may skyrocket during the first six months of courtship). Oxytocin also plays a significant role in maternal physiology, psychology and behavior. During childbirth, oxytocin is triggered and released by the vagina as the cervix widens; this increases the contractions of the uterus. Oxytocin is integral to lactation, as nipple stimulation allows secretion of the hormone and facilitates the “letting down” of milk. Studies have linked oxytocin with strong bonding between mothers and their children.
What can I expect during an Oxytocin treatment?
For your Oxytocin appointment, initially you will be prescribed sublingual (under the tongue) compounded oxytocin. In addition to being called the love hormone, oxytocin has also been nicknamed “the bliss hormone,” “the cuddle chemical,” “the trust hormone,” and “the hug hormone.” Thus, feelings reminiscent of its monikers may surface. If you’re pregnant and using oxytocin during childbirth, you can expect a much easier delivery: It may be used to initiate labor, strengthen contractions, and reduce blood loss after delivery.
